Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that all parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine war are making concessions to bring the conflict to an end.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said his focus is on stopping the loss of life rather than financial costs.
“I’ve had many conversations about Ukraine,” Trump said. “This isn’t about money. It’s about losing 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers every month.”
Trump held several bilateral meetings during the forum, including talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said Europe stands to benefit the most from a peace deal but stressed that saving lives remains his top priority.
When asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would also compromise, Trump replied confidently: “He’ll make concessions. Everybody is making concessions to get it done.”
Trump added that Europe will play a central role in any agreement. “I’m doing this more for Europe than for myself. First, I want to save lives. Second, I want stability for Europe,” he said.
The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy lasted about an hour. Zelenskyy later described the talks as “productive and substantive.” He said both sides discussed air defense support and close coordination with U.S. teams.
Earlier on Thursday, Zelenskyy announced that the first three-way talks between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine will take place in the United Arab Emirates on Friday and Saturday.
