A 38-year-old Egyptian man, Mohamed Kaness, has been deported after swinging a screwdriver at a security guard in a Dublin supermarket. The incident went viral after footage appeared on social media.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Kaness, formerly of Gardiner Street, Dublin, was charged with unlawful possession of a flathead screwdriver as a weapon. He was also charged with producing an implement capable of causing serious injury. The offence occurred at Lidl on Talbot Street on August 7th, 2025.
He was granted strict bail on August 9th at Dublin District Court. Following adjournments, Kaness later pleaded guilty and was remanded on bail pending sentence. A probation report was to be submitted at his next hearing.
Deportation Ends Court Case
At the case’s latest hearing, defence solicitor Luke Staines informed the court that Kaness had been deported to Egypt on January 15th. Judge Michele Finan confirmed his removal and made no further order, effectively closing the case.
Garda Concerns and Background
Garda Paul Mooney had opposed bail, citing possible witness interference. During his interview, Kaness allegedly made threatening remarks toward authorities.
Initially, gardaí were called to the store over reports of a man with a knife. It was later confirmed that Kaness had a broad-headed screwdriver, which he was swinging at security personnel.
The accused lacked a fixed address after losing his hostel placement. Under bail conditions, he had agreed to reside with a friend and avoid Talbot Street and his former hostel.
