Civil society organisations have trained 15,000 Nigerian youths on green economy and digital skills to improve employability and job readiness.
The training programme was delivered by Young Advocates for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future Nigeria, the International Association for Volunteer Effort, and International Business Machines Corporation.
Programme Focus and Goals
Organisers said the initiative aims to prepare young people for opportunities in the green and digital economies. The programme focuses on practical skills that match current labour market needs.
Participants received training through IBM SkillsBuild, a global digital learning platform that provides access to professional, technical, and sustainability skills.
SkillsBuild Programme in Africa
In Africa, the SkillsBuild programme operates under the Reskilling Revolution Africa initiative. The programme runs through partnerships involving IAVE, IBM, and the African Union.
National civil society partners coordinate the programme at the country level. The digital platform allows self-paced learning, tracks progress, and awards internationally recognised digital credentials.
Success of Pilot Phase in Nigeria
Nigeria recorded strong results during the pilot phase of the programme. More than 12,000 young people enrolled, exceeding the initial target.
Most participants came from unemployed and underemployed groups, including students in tertiary and technical institutions. Female participation also exceeded expectations.
Learners completed about 93,000 learning hours and earned nearly 2,000 digital credentials.
Expansion Under Phase Two
Following the pilot success, organisers launched Phase Two of the programme. This phase targets the enrolment of 15,000 young Nigerians over 12 months.
At least half of the participants are expected to be women. Training will take place in Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Katsina, and Niger State.
Learning Model and Skill Areas
Participants will join weekly learning groups through a blended approach. This model combines online lessons with in-person coaching, mentoring, and peer support.
The training covers climate change, green economy skills, digital marketing, artificial intelligence, web development, project management, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
Employability and Volunteer Support
The programme also includes employability support such as CV writing, interview preparation, and job placement partnerships.
Entrepreneurship training and mentorship support participants interested in self-employment. Volunteers play a key role by helping learners apply their skills through community projects.
