China has removed one of its most senior military leaders, signaling a continued internal crackdown within the armed forces. Authorities confirmed that General Zhang Youxia is under investigation for serious violations of party rules and state laws.

The announcement was released by China’s Defense Ministry, marking one of the most significant leadership changes in the country’s military in recent months.

Zhang Youxia Removed From Post

Zhang Youxia served as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, making him the highest ranking military officer in China after President Xi Jinping. His removal places him at the center of the latest military investigation.

Chinese officials did not provide further details on the allegations. However, investigations of this nature often lead to dismissal or prosecution under party discipline procedures.

Investigation Expands to Other Senior Officers

In addition to Zhang, the Communist Party confirmed an investigation into Liu Zhenli, who currently serves as chief of staff of the Joint Staff Department. Both officers held critical leadership roles within the People’s Liberation Army.

The developments reflect a broader effort to tighten discipline and oversight within China’s military leadership.

Recent Military Shakeups

This latest move follows a series of senior level removals since October. During that period, authorities dismissed former vice chairman He Weidong. Zhang Shengmin was later appointed as his replacement.

Analysts say the pattern points to ongoing restructuring and internal enforcement within the armed forces.

International Context and U.S. Strategy

The leadership changes come shortly after the United States released an updated National Defense Strategy. The document shifts U.S. military focus toward the Western Hemisphere while emphasizing stronger cooperation with allied nations.

The strategy states that the United States seeks to avoid direct conflict with China. However, it also highlights the need to defend American interests when necessary and encourages allies to increase their own defense investments.
