Berlin, Germany – January 24, 2026 – Germany and the African Union (AU) have confirmed plans to co-host the third international Sudan conference in Berlin in April 2026. The meeting aims to advance peace efforts and mobilize humanitarian aid amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
German Commitment to Peace in Sudan
German Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s support during talks with AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssou in Addis Ababa. This will be the third Sudan conference, following previous meetings in Paris and London. The conference is expected to focus on implementing peace agreements, including the Pretoria Peace Agreement, and coordinating international humanitarian support.
Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
Sudan’s conflict, now entering its third year, erupted on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, before spreading nationwide. The United Nations (UN) has described the crisis as the world’s largest humanitarian emergency:
-
Over 21 million people face food insecurity, with famine confirmed in some regions.
-
Nearly 12 million people have been displaced, seeking refuge within Sudan or across borders.
-
Around 3.7 million children and pregnant or breastfeeding women are malnourished.
-
More than 20 million people require medical assistance, and 21 million need urgent food aid.
Since 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) has verified 201 attacks on healthcare facilities, causing 1,858 deaths and 490 injuries. UN agencies estimate that billions of dollars will be needed in 2026, with the World Food Programme (WFP) alone requiring USD 700 million for operations from January to June.
Diplomatic and Economic Engagement in Ethiopia
During his visit to Ethiopia and the AU headquarters, Wadephul emphasized Germany’s commitment to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. He met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Discussions covered peacebuilding, economic collaboration, and global partnerships.
Wadephul also met Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos to celebrate 120 years of diplomatic relations. Both nations pledged cooperation on counter-terrorism, climate action, and fostering a stable investment climate to attract German businesses.
Business Delegation and Investment Forum
The German delegation included senior parliamentarians and business leaders, including representatives from Bayer, signaling strong interest in investment in Ethiopia. The group participated in an investment and trade forum organized by the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), highlighting opportunities for foreign businesses in the country.
