Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, have formally received former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Enoidem, into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection took place on Friday during a well-attended political rally in Utu Etim Ekpo, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The event drew party leaders, government officials, and supporters from across the state.

Akpabio Describes Defection as “Return of a Lost Son”

Speaking at the rally, Senate President Akpabio described Enoidem’s return to the APC as symbolic and significant. He compared the moment to the biblical parable of a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for one that had strayed.

Akpabio recalled that Enoidem previously served as a commissioner during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State. He said their reunion marked a healing moment in the state’s political history.

“This rally reconnects me with one of my political mentees,” Akpabio said. “I am pleased to welcome Emmanuel Enoidem back home to the APC.”

Governor Umo Eno Praises Unity and Peace

Governor Umo Eno commended Enoidem for what he described as a courageous and strategic political decision. He said the move would strengthen unity and promote peace across Akwa Ibom State.

According to the governor, peaceful politics remains essential for sustainable development and democratic stability. He added that the defection would help ensure calm and orderly elections in the future.

Governor Eno also acknowledged Enoidem’s role in his emergence as governor. He revealed that even while Enoidem remained in the PDP, he had pledged support for his re-election and that of Senator Akpabio.

“After careful discussions, we agreed that joining the APC would better serve the overall interest of Akwa Ibom State,” the governor said.

APC Confident Ahead of 2027 Elections

Akpabio expressed confidence that the APC would secure victory in the 2027 general elections following the defection. He said the growing unity within the party would translate into peaceful campaigns and strong electoral outcomes across the state.

He also thanked the people of Etim Ekpo for their support during the 2023 elections, despite political differences at the time. According to him, the return of Enoidem removes past divisions and sets the stage for rancour-free elections.

During the rally, supporters openly declared their backing for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Umo Eno, and Senate President Akpabio.

Enoidem Explains Decision to Leave PDP

In his remarks, Emmanuel Enoidem said his decision to defect from the PDP followed a careful assessment of political realities in Akwa Ibom State. He noted that the majority of the state’s political structure now aligns with the ruling party.

According to him, remaining in the opposition would limit the state’s access to opportunities and federal collaboration.

“Politics should serve the people,” Enoidem said. “I believe joining the APC will better position Akwa Ibom for growth, peace, and development.”

Wide Attendance Signals Political Shift

The rally attracted several political stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, members of the State House of Assembly, State Executive Council members, local government chairmen, party leaders, as well as traditional and religious figures.

Observers say the high turnout and public endorsements signal a major political realignment in Akwa Ibom State ahead of future elections.
