Arrest Follows Mali AFCON Exit

The ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has continued to generate headlines following the arrest of a Malian traditional healer over an alleged fake victory prophecy.

The individual, identified as Sinayogo, reportedly collected donations totaling €33,500 after claiming he could spiritually guarantee Mali’s success at AFCON 2025.

Mali, however, suffered a 1 to 0 defeat to Senegal in the quarter final stage of the tournament on Friday, January 9.

Fraud Allegations Surface

Following Mali’s elimination, angry residents reportedly gathered at Sinayogo’s residence in Bamako. Police later intervened and arrested him over fraud related allegations, according to a report by Barrons.

Authorities confirmed that the arrest took place on Saturday, January 10. Sinayogo was taken into custody and held by the cybercrime division.

An associate disclosed that the healer received more than 22 million CFA francs in donations before the match.

Authorities React to Incident

A senior official from the cybercrime division stated that charlatan practices are punishable under Malian law.

The official added that arresting the suspect earlier during the tournament could have caused unrest due to public emotions surrounding AFCON.

A social media content creator familiar with the case claimed Sinayogo was previously known as a political activist before presenting himself as a marabout and receiving large donations.

Social Media Reactions Emerge

The incident gained traction on social media after being shared by a political media aide in Nigeria.

Several Nigerians reacted online, drawing parallels with similar claims and controversies involving spiritual predictions and political promises.

The reactions ranged from satire to criticism, highlighting wider public skepticism around prophecy based claims tied to sports and politics.

Background on AFCON 2025

AFCON 2025 continues in Morocco with intense competition among African nations.

Mali’s exit has shifted focus toward the remaining teams as the tournament moves into its decisive stages.
