ADC Calls for Unity Among Supporters
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned supporters of its presidential aspirants against making divisive statements ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party said internal division among supporters would only benefit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Divisive Rhetoric Helps the APC – ADC
Speaking during an X (formerly Twitter) Spaces discussion on Saturday, the ADC Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged supporters to stop hostile campaigns against fellow aspirants on the party’s platform.
He said divisive comments weaken the opposition and reduce the chances of victory in 2027.
Aspirants Committed to One Goal
The ADC currently has several high-profile presidential aspirants. They include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Abdullahi disclosed that he has held meetings with Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. According to him, all leaders agree that the party must focus on improving Nigeria and winning the next election.
“I spent time talking to Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. The consensus is clear. We have a responsibility to make this country better,” Abdullahi said.
Winning the Election Is the Priority
Abdullahi stressed that securing the party ticket alone does not guarantee success. He said victory at the polls should remain the main objective.
He warned supporters against slogans such as “this candidate or nothing,” describing them as harmful to the party’s chances.
“Getting the ticket alone means nothing. What matters is winning the election. We cannot carry division and expect to succeed,” he said.
Warning to Overzealous Supporters
The ADC spokesperson also cautioned supporters who attack other aspirants or regions. He said such actions discourage broader national support.
He specifically addressed supporters promoting “Peter Obi or nothing,” stating that such rhetoric does not help the former Anambra governor.
“Those shouting ‘Peter Obi or nothing’ are not helping him. They are creating division and pushing people into hard positions,” Abdullahi said.
ADC Focuses on Party Strength and Unity
Abdullahi said the party will begin internal processes to strengthen unity among its leaders. He added that the ADC would ignore individuals who promote exclusion and focus on building a strong coalition.
“All our aspirants are qualified. Vilifying anyone or any region only makes our job harder. Everyone must come on board for us to win,” he said.
