Uganda’s military has stepped up security operations linked to retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu. The country’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said security forces had seized guns, ammunition, and a vehicle from properties connected to the former army commander.

The military leadership reportedly removed Elwelu’s rank and reduced him to the rank of a private before searching properties linked to him. The Uganda military seizes weapons Elwelu operation reportedly led to the recovery of guns and ammunition.

According to military statements, special forces searched properties in the Teso sub-region and recovered several weapons, including automatic rifles and sub-machine guns, as well as ammunition. The military is investigating concerns about weapons allegedly kept outside official military control.

Security forces have also reportedly arrested Elwelu’s driver and more than 20 former soldiers linked to him. Authorities say the arrests are part of an investigation into suspected activities against the state.

Elwelu previously attracted international attention for his role in the 2016 military raid on the palace of Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere in Kasese. More than 150 people reportedly died during the operation, which drew criticism from human rights groups.

Reports suggest that Elwelu has gone into hiding as security operations linked to him continue.

The Uganda military seizes weapons Elwelu operation has sparked debate in Uganda. Some people support the military’s actions, arguing that weapons outside official control could threaten national security. Others question whether proper legal procedures were followed when Elwelu’s rank was removed and the operations were carried out.

Critics say the authorities must respect due process and the rule of law. They also warn that growing disagreements within the military could increase political tensions in the country.
