Syria and Israel Hold Security Talks in Jordan to Calm Border Tensions

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al‑Shaibani and Israeli Mossad Director Roman Gofman met in Jordan to talk about ways to ease tensions between Syria and Israel. The meeting came soon after an Israeli airstrike hit the Abu al‑Duhur military airbase in northwestern Syria.

The goal of the Syria and Israel security talks was to stop the latest clashes from turning into a bigger regional conflict. Israel raised concerns about Syria’s cooperation with Turkey, while Syrian officials repeated that they do not plan to allow a permanent Turkish military presence at the base. The two men had already spoken by phone earlier in August, but this face‑to‑face meeting gave them a chance to continue the discussion.

Neither the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office nor Syrian state media have confirmed the meeting publicly. At the same time, U.S. diplomats are pushing for a system that would involve Syria, Israel, and Turkey working together to avoid further military incidents.

Syria has made it clear that any lasting security deal must include Israel pulling out of Syrian territory and ending airstrikes. These demands remain central to Damascus’s position as talks continue.
