Addressing the Otti fuel subsidy removal discussions, Governor Otti defended ending the program and described the old system as a heavy burden on Nigeria’s finances.

Speaking about Nigeria’s economic reforms, the Labour Party governor of Abia State said removing fuel subsidies was necessary to help improve the country’s economy and manage government funds better.

The governor said the former subsidy system created room for waste and the misuse of public money. He argued that the government could have used those funds for important areas such as roads, healthcare, and education instead of keeping fuel prices artificially low.

Governor Otti, who worked as a banker and financial analyst before entering politics, said government money should be used for productive projects instead of fuel subsidies. He explained that the money previously used to support petrol prices could bring more benefits if invested in infrastructure, industries, and other important public services.

His position is part of the wider economic reform debate in Nigeria. State and federal governments are working to manage the economic changes that followed adjustments to the fuel subsidy policy.

Governor Otti also spoke about electricity costs and power supply problems affecting businesses in eastern Nigeria. He said businesses need a steady power supply to operate properly, even if this means paying tariffs that reflect the real cost of electricity.

Many small and medium-sized businesses in Abia State, especially those in manufacturing areas such as Aba, spend a lot of money running diesel generators because of unreliable electricity.

Public reactions to the Otti fuel subsidy removal stance have been varied, drawing mixed responses from financial analysts, civil society groups, and everyday citizens.”

Some financial analysts have praised his consistent position on economic reforms and government spending. However, other commentators have raised concerns about the immediate effect of higher transport, food, and energy costs on low-income families.
