On Saturday, Niger’s Defense Minister announced that military activity in Niamey had been brought under control after hours of gunfire and explosions around key sites. Security forces regained control of areas near Diori Hamani International Airport, Base 101, and the Presidential Palace, which had all been targeted during the unrest.
The incident began when a group of soldiers broke away from military order and attempted to detain fellow soldiers at Base 101, a facility located near the airport. According to the minister, the group then opened fire on several important locations in the city. Defense and security forces responded quickly, intervening to restore order and gradually regaining control of the targeted areas.

Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions overnight and into Saturday morning around the airport and the Presidential Palace. However, This was not the first time the airport had come under attack, it has already been attacked twice earlier this year, once in January and again in June, both times involving Base 101. This latest incident again involved these same sites, underscoring their vulnerability and the ongoing instability in Niamey.
The authorities confirmed that the swift intervention of Nigerien defense and security forces prevented the situation from escalating further. Operations continued in the affected areas after control was regained, as officials worked to ensure stability. The defense minister repeated his call for residents to remain calm, stressing that the government was committed to maintaining order.
