“Psilocybin cancer nerve damage research is drawing attention after US scientists found that the psychedelic compound may help prevent nerve damage caused by chemotherapy.

This findings are important because chemotherapy often causes peripheral neuropathy, also called CIPN. It can lead to numbness, tingling, sensitivity and persistent pain in the hands and feet.

The link between psilocybin and nerve protection was not the main focus of the research. Scientists at MD Anderson were studying how cancer can interact with and influence nerve cells. During the process, psilocybin was investigated for its effects on neuroplasticity, the nervous system’s ability to change and adapt.
Researchers unexpectedly found that psilocybin helped prevent the development of peripheral neuropathy in their lab models.That discovery led to more lab study on how the compound might help prevent nerve cells damage
The research also pointed to a specific biological pathway in the body involving the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. Most importantly, the scientists found that the nerve-protective effect may not depend entirely on the psychedelic effects of psilocybin.
Researchers tested a non-hallucinogenic compound that targeted the same pathway and had similar effects in laboratory studies. They said this could be important for future drug development because it may be possible to preserve the nerve-protective benefits without the psychedelic effects.
In the animal studies, researchers gave psilocybin before chemotherapy. According to MD Anderson, giving psilocybin before treatment prevented chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in several animal models. The protective effect lasted through repeated cycles of chemotherapy.
Mice were given psilocybin before undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy. Researchers found that untreated animals showed signs of nerve damage, including increased sensitivity and deterioration of sensory nerve endings. The researchers reported that the treatment did not make chemotherapy less effective against cancer in the animal study.
This matters because any drug designed to manage chemotherapy side effects must work without interfering with the cancer treatment itself.
MD Anderson Cancer Center is sponsoring the trial. The study will test whether psilocybin can prevent or reduce nerve damage caused by chemotherapy. Researchers will compare psilocybin with standard supportive care in cancer patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy.
The study is not recruiting yet, and the planned start date is November 2026.
