French teacher death threats have led to a six-month jail sentence for a 47-year-old father who threatened a teacher after his son was disciplined at a school near Toulouse.
Six days after the incident in Le Fauga, a small village in southwestern France, the man was sentenced during a fast-tracked hearing in Toulouse on Thursday.
The teacher, who is in her 50s, has now been placed under police protection and is currently on sick leave following the threat. The incident has caused concern among staff and residents because of the serious nature of the threat against the teacher.

French Education Minister Edouard Geffray criticised what happened. He said teachers should not have to fear for their safety while carrying out their professional responsibilities. He added that the French government is working to provide better protection for teachers and other school workers.
The case reminded people in France of another attack six years ago. A teacher named Samuel Paty was beheaded outside his school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, near Paris. He was killed by an 18-year-old Chechen refugee in a jihadist attack.
Following the French teacher death threats on Friday, teachers and other staff at the primary school did not go to school on Monday.
The French teacher death threat came after an argument about a student at a primary school in Le Fauga. The school asked the boy’s father to attend a meeting about his son’s behaviour in class.
The boy had been causing trouble in the classroom. He was moved to another class, but he continued misbehaving. The teacher reprimanded him for his behaviour, which later led to a confrontation with the boy’s father outside the school.
Le Fauga Mayor Jean-Marie Puig said the father had waited outside the school before confronting the teacher. He said the man threatened to cut off the teacher’s head after his son was disciplined at school.
The father later apologised, but the threat was considered serious, so the teacher filed a complaint.
On Thursday, the father went to court in Toulouse. Prosecutors had asked for six months of house arrest, but the judge decided that the threat was serious and sentenced him to prison instead.
During the hearing, the court said the threat was particularly serious because of previous attacks against teachers in France. The judge referred to Samuel Paty, a teacher who was killed in a jihadist attack outside his school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in 2020 after showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson on freedom of expression.
The man apologised in court and said he was not proud of what he had done. However, the judge still sent him to prison because of the seriousness of the threat.
The court also ordered the man to take a citizenship course. He was banned from going near the school or contacting the teacher. The restrictions were imposed to help keep the teacher and the school community safe.
