Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have launched an investigation into the death of a 27-year-old woman, Esther Akwaji, in Abuja.
The FCT Police Command confirmed the development in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.
Woman Reported Missing After Leaving Home
According to the police, the case was reported by the deceased’s brother, Mr. Peter Akwaji, on January 22 at about 11:00 p.m. He contacted the Dei-Dei Divisional Police Headquarters through a distress call.
Mr. Akwaji told officers that his sister left their home on January 21 at around 3:00 p.m. She said she was going to a bank in the Dei-Dei area. However, she never returned home.
Anonymous Call Raises Alarm
Later that same day, at about 10:30 p.m., Mr. Akwaji received an anonymous phone call. The caller identified himself as Esther’s boyfriend.
The man claimed that Esther had visited him at his residence. He said he bought food for her, but she began vomiting shortly after eating.
According to the caller, he rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead while she was receiving treatment.
Police Recover Body, Begin Investigation
Following the report, police officers from the Dei-Dei Division immediately visited the hospital. They recovered the body of the deceased and placed it in the hospital mortuary.
Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
SP Adeh said investigators have begun discreet inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. She added that officers are making efforts to locate and arrest the alleged boyfriend, who is currently on the run.
Police Assure Public of Justice
The FCT Police Command assured the public that it would conduct a thorough investigation. The command pledged to ensure that anyone found responsible would face justice.
SP Adeh said the police would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
