Police Arrest Traffic Offenders on Lagos Calabar Coastal Road
The Lagos State Police Command has warned motorists on the Lagos Calabar Coastal Road to follow traffic rules or face arrest and prosecution.
During a joint briefing in Lagos, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, spoke alongside the Federal Controller of Works, Olufemi Dare. The briefing addressed safety concerns and rising traffic violations on the road.
Increased Police Presence on Coastal Road
Since the temporary opening of the road in December, police officers have maintained strong patrols to manage traffic and ensure safety.
To support this effort, the command deploys over 50 patrol teams every day on both sides of the highway. Their role is to protect lives and property.
According to Jimoh, no cases of robbery, car snatching or kidnapping have occurred on the road since the patrols began.
Motorcycles Banned From Highway
Enforcement against traffic violations has increased, leading to the seizure of 68 motorcycles for illegal use of the road.
Jimoh stated that motorcycles, including dispatch bikes, must not use the superhighway. He explained that their presence puts riders and motorists at risk.
Mobile Courts Begin Trials
Mobile court operations have started on the coastal road to handle traffic offences quickly.
Officers will arrest drivers who overspeed, drive against traffic or engage in street racing. Authorities will tow offending vehicles and prosecute the drivers.
Speed Limit Fixed at 40km Per Hour
Police currently hold about 18 drivers for speeding offences on the highway.
Jimoh also confirmed the arrest of a driver linked to the death of a construction worker on the road.
He reminded motorists that the speed limit during construction is 40 kilometres per hour. Any driver who exceeds the limit will face arrest and prosecution.
