Nigeria secured a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a dominant 4 0 victory over Mozambique in their round of 16 clash.
Victor Osimhen scored twice as the Super Eagles delivered one of their most convincing performances of the tournament, overwhelming their opponents in Fes.
Nigeria Take Control Early
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman opened the scoring with a composed finish. The Atalanta forward was heavily involved throughout the match and played a key role in all four goals.
Five minutes later, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead with a close range effort. The striker later added his second goal shortly after the restart, effectively ending any hopes of a Mozambique comeback.
Akor Adams completed the rout with Nigeria’s fourth goal late in the second half.
Dominant Display From the Super Eagles
Nigeria’s performance marked the largest winning margin in an AFCON knockout match since Egypt’s 4 0 semifinal win in 2010.
Coach Eric Chelle made several changes from the group stage, but the team showed cohesion and sharpness across the pitch. Lookman returned to the starting lineup and justified the decision with an outstanding display.
The winger also provided assists for Osimhen and Adams, underlining his importance to Nigeria’s attacking play.
Quarterfinal Clash Awaits
The Super Eagles will now face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Marrakesh.
Mozambique, who reached the knockout stage for the first time in their AFCON history, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace, movement, and attacking depth.
Osimhen now has three goals at the tournament, while Lookman continues to stand out as one of AFCON 2025’s top performers.
