The Nigerian Army has taken a significant step to promote economic independence among women in Sokoto. On Monday, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, presented 20 brand new motorcycles to women in Giginya Cantonment. The initiative is part of the Army’s ongoing Barracks Women Empowerment Scheme.
The motorcycles were handed over at the NAOWA Leisure Park to enhance mobility and support income-generating activities for women, particularly those engaged in petty trading. Major General Ajose, who also serves as the Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, emphasized that the initiative reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving the welfare of military families.
“This empowerment programme is designed to improve access to markets and enable women to grow their businesses,” he said.
The program also aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s directive to boost morale and well-being within the barracks community. Major General Ajose praised women leaders in the cantonment for their contributions to sustaining peace and harmony among personnel and families.
Hajiya Amina Adamu, the Magajiya of Giginya Cantonment, received the motorcycles on behalf of the beneficiaries. She assured that the motorcycles would be fairly distributed and properly maintained.
The handover ceremony saw participation from formation commanders, senior officers, and representatives from the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) and the Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA). The event concluded with the symbolic handing over of keys, presentation of souvenirs, and group photographs.
This empowerment initiative marks another milestone by the Nigerian Army in strengthening the economic resilience of military families in the North West region.
