Nigeria and Türkiye Set 5 Billion Dollar Trade Target
Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to work toward a 5 billion dollar bilateral trade volume following the signing of nine cooperation agreements covering defence, trade, energy, education and social development.
The agreement was reached during President Bola Tinubu’s official state visit to Ankara, where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Both leaders addressed the media after reviewing the current state of relations between the two countries.
According to official information from Nigeria’s presidency, the discussions focused on strengthening economic ties and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors.
New Trade and Investment Framework
President Erdogan announced that both countries would establish a Joint Economy and Trade Committee to drive investment and trade expansion. The committee is expected to support Turkish investments in Nigeria while improving market access for businesses on both sides.
He stated that Nigeria and Türkiye have strong untapped potential in trade and investment, noting that structured cooperation would be key to achieving the 5 billion dollar trade goal.
Energy and Defence Cooperation
Türkiye expressed interest in deeper collaboration in Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly following recent reforms. Erdogan said cooperation between Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners could deliver positive outcomes.
On security, Türkiye pledged support for Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism, especially threats linked to instability in the Sahel region. The Turkish government offered to share experience in military training, intelligence and counterterrorism operations.
Tinubu Emphasises Inclusive Economic Growth
President Tinubu welcomed Türkiye’s commitment to cooperation and highlighted the importance of open trade and inclusive economic policies. He stressed the need to create opportunities for citizens, especially vulnerable groups, to participate in economic growth.
The Nigerian leader also reaffirmed Nigeria’s role in promoting peace and stability across Africa despite ongoing security challenges.
