Newcastle United took a first half lead against Brentford at St James Park thanks to a goal from Sven Botman.
The defender marked his 100th appearance for the club with a powerful header. He connected with a Bruno Guimarães corner at the Gallowgate End to put the Magpies ahead.
Early Pressure from Newcastle
Newcastle started the match on the front foot. Within three minutes, Harvey Barnes fired a shot narrowly wide of the post. Shortly after, Sandro Tonali took a free kick following a foul on Lewis Hall. However, his effort missed the target.
In the 15th minute, Newcastle came close again. Tonali swung in a corner that was punched clear by Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. As a result, Jacob Murphy picked up the loose ball and drove a low shot toward goal. Barnes flicked it on, but the ball went just wide.

Brentford Create Chances
Despite Newcastle’s control, Brentford responded. Mathias Jensen capitalised on a loose pass from Murphy and drove toward the penalty area. He struck a shot from 20 yards, but Nick Pope made a comfortable save.
Meanwhile, Brentford looked to build momentum but struggled to break through Newcastle’s defence.
Boost from Bruno Guimarães Return
Bruno Guimarães returned to the starting lineup after missing four matches with an ankle injury. The injury occurred during Newcastle’s Champions League win over Paris Saint Germain. Notably, the Magpies failed to win any of the games he missed.
His presence added stability in midfield and helped Newcastle control possession.
