A US federal court sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for attempting to assassinate Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. The court added seven extra years to his sentence.
The attack took place at a golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September 2024.
Court Hands Down Life Sentence
US District Judge Aileen Cannon delivered the ruling on Wednesday. Routh, 59, represented himself during the trial. A jury found him guilty on all charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer.
Prosecutors said Routh showed no remorse and remained unrepentant even after the conviction.

Secret Service Stopped the Attack
A US Secret Service agent spotted Routh aiming a rifle before Trump entered the area. The agent opened fire, forcing Routh to drop his weapon and flee. No shots were fired by Routh. Officials said the quick response prevented a deadly outcome.
Courtroom Incident After Verdict
After the verdict, Routh tried to harm himself in the courtroom with a pen. Security officers restrained him without further injury.
Second Attempt on Trump in 2024
This was the second known attempt on Trump’s life in 2024. The first occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear.

Trump later won the November 2024 election and returned to the White House in January 2025.
Ongoing Security Concerns
The attacks raised serious concerns about security for high-profile political figures in the US. Authorities continue reviewing protective measures for national leaders and presidential candidates.
