Obi Aguocha, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation, has warned Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo against the current approach to ending the Monday sit at home order in the state.

Concerns Over Rising Tension

The lawmaker, who chairs a House of Representatives committee, said efforts to restore peace in the region were already showing progress before the recent government actions. According to him, the situation had remained fragile but stable in many communities.

He noted that several markets and business areas across the South East had gradually resumed normal activities over the past few years.

Warning on Enforcement Measures

The lawmaker argued that while ending sit at home may be necessary, the method used matters. He said forceful enforcement has renewed fear and resistance among residents.

According to him, compelling traders to open or close their shops could trigger fresh unrest and criminal activity.

Legal Rights of Business Owners

He stressed that state governments do not have the legal power to force private business owners to trade. He added that decisions on when to open or close shops fall under citizens’ fundamental rights.

He also questioned whether similar actions would apply to businesses that close for religious or personal reasons.

Federal Role in Regional Stability

On the broader security issue, the lawmaker said unresolved grievances remain a major cause of unrest in the South East. He pointed to the continued detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu as a factor fueling agitation.

He warned that failure to address these issues could prolong tension and instability in the region.

Background to Sit at Home Order

The Monday sit at home practice began in 2021 after the arrest and extradition of Nnamdi Kanu. Although the directive was later suspended, fear and insecurity led to continued compliance in many areas.

Since then, state governments have struggled to restore full economic activity. Attempts to enforce compliance have often resulted in resistance and renewed tension.

Call for Caution

The lawmaker urged authorities to focus on dialogue, security, and trust. He said lasting peace would depend on addressing root causes rather than using force.
