Russia has said it will keep fighting in Ukraine unless Kyiv accepts conditions set by the Kremlin. The statement came as the first day of peace talks in Abu Dhabi ended on Wednesday.
The talks aim to find a way to end the war, which is now close to its fourth year. The United States is leading the mediation effort.
Peace Talks Hold in Abu Dhabi
Russia, Ukraine, and the United States began two days of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi. Negotiators are expected to continue discussions on Thursday.
President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff leads the US delegation, alongside Jared Kushner. Ukraine is represented by National Security and Defence Council secretary Rustem Umerov. Russia’s team is led by military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov.

Despite reports of progress, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russian troops would continue military operations until Ukraine agrees to Moscow’s demands.
Donetsk Dispute Blocks Progress
Russia wants Ukrainian forces to withdraw from parts of the Donetsk region. The area includes heavily defended cities that play a key role in Ukraine’s frontline defenses.
Ukraine has rejected the proposal. Kyiv insists any agreement should freeze the conflict along current battle lines. This dispute remains the main obstacle in the talks.
Ukraine Says Talks Were Productive
Umerov described the first day of talks as productive. He said discussions focused on practical steps to reduce the conflict.
Negotiators reportedly met in smaller groups before holding joint sessions. The goal was to address security and territorial issues in detail.
Attacks Continue During Negotiations
The talks took place amid ongoing fighting. Ukrainian officials said Russia launched 105 drones overnight between 3 and 4 February.
In the Donetsk region, an attack hit the town of Druzhkivka. Officials said the strike targeted a market area. At least seven people died, while eight others were injured.

Zelensky Accuses Russia of Breaking Truce
President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of violating a temporary truce requested by President Trump. The truce aimed to reduce civilian suffering during winter.
Zelensky said Ukraine would adjust its position due to the continued attacks.
The European Commission also accused Moscow of using ceasefire talks to strike civilian infrastructure. A commission spokesperson said Russia could end the war immediately but has not shown willingness to do so.
Diplomatic Activity Expands
President Trump also held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. They discussed the Ukraine war, Taiwan, Iran, and energy trade.
The Kremlin confirmed it had advance notice of the call. Russian President Vladimir Putin also spoke with Xi on Wednesday.
Moscow said working-level talks with France are ongoing. These talks could lead to a future meeting between Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Uncertain Path Ahead
Peace talks will continue in Abu Dhabi, but major differences remain. Russia continues to demand territorial concessions. Ukraine refuses to give up land.
While diplomacy continues, the fighting on the ground shows that a ceasefire is still far off.
