US Vice President JD Vance faced boos from sections of the crowd during the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan on Friday. The reaction came as his image appeared on large screens inside the San Siro stadium.

Vance attended the ceremony with his wife, Usha Vance. Both waved and applauded as American athletes marched past during the parade of nations. Despite the boos directed at Vance, the US team received strong cheers from spectators.
Ukraine Team Draws Loud Applause
Some of the loudest and warmest applause of the night was reserved for the Ukrainian team. Fans stood and cheered as Ukrainian athletes entered the stadium, reflecting continued public support amid the ongoing war.
Russian athletes did not take part in the parade. Olympic rules required them to compete as neutral athletes following sanctions linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Organizers excluded neutral competitors from the opening ceremony march.

Protests Held Ahead of Ceremony
Earlier on Friday, hundreds of protesters gathered across Milan to oppose Vance’s visit. Demonstrators also objected to the presence of US immigration enforcement agents assisting with security for the American delegation.
Authorities closed several streets across the city as protests continued. Helicopters flew over historic districts throughout the evening to monitor the situation.
Diplomatic Meetings Continue
During his visit, Vance met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The two leaders discussed relations between the United States and Italy. Vance praised what he described as shared values between both countries.
The opening ceremony marked the official start of the Winter Olympics, drawing global attention as athletes and world leaders gathered in Milan.
