Greenland Warns Residents to Prepare
Greenland’s government has warned residents to prepare for possible emergencies amid rising tensions with the United States. This warning follows renewed US claims over the Arctic territory by President Donald Trump.
Task Force and Emergency Measures
Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said authorities are forming a task force to help residents get ready. He emphasized that conflict is unlikely, but “it cannot be ruled out.”
Finance Minister Mute Bourup Egede confirmed the island faces “a lot of pressure.” He added that authorities are drafting new civil preparedness guidelines. Residents are advised to stock food for at least five days. Greenland’s population is around 57,000.
US Interest in Greenland
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland. He cites national security concerns and the need to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. He has suggested buying the territory from Denmark and has not ruled out using force.
Denmark Responds With Military Exercises
Denmark, which retains sovereignty over Greenland, has deployed additional troops. This is part of the Arctic Endurance military exercise. The exercise responds directly to recent US statements.
Rising Tensions in Europe
Trump also threatened tariffs on European countries opposing his Greenland plans, including Denmark, Britain, France, and Germany. These actions increase political and economic pressure on the region.
Preparing for All Scenarios
Although officials stress that military conflict is unlikely, Greenland is taking precautions. Authorities continue monitoring developments closely. They aim to ensure residents are ready for any possible scenario.
