Fashola Stresses Policy Knowledge for Nigerian Ambassadors
Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has urged newly appointed Nigerian ambassadors to learn Nigeria’s policies and economic priorities before starting their foreign postings.
Speaking at the Nigeria Reputation Summit 2026 in Abuja, Fashola said diplomatic success depends on how well ambassadors communicate Nigeria’s positions to foreign governments and investors.
He shared a past example when an ambassador abroad lacked knowledge of Nigeria’s stance on ministry-related matters. Fashola warned that such gaps weaken Nigeria’s interests. He said, “Ambassadors must know our policies, fiscal position, tax laws, investment incentives, oil and gas policies, mineral mining framework, and business registration processes before their postings.”
Collaboration and Investment Promotion
Fashola recommended inter-ministerial collaboration to ensure ambassadors are well-prepared. He added that it is “never too late” to address knowledge gaps.
He also criticized ambassadors inviting ministers abroad. Instead, he advised that Nigeria should invite global partners and investors to the country. This approach aligns with the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) framework.
Fashola emphasized using Nigeria’s cultural and entertainment strengths to attract visitors. He noted that firsthand experiences help counter negative perceptions about Nigeria.
PR Opportunities for Nigeria
Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, said lobbying is a legitimate function and not a crime. He raised concerns about the federal government’s $9 million US lobbying deal, questioning the process and value.
Neliaku also highlighted that Nigeria will host the Global Alliance World Public Relations Forum in November 2026. Hosting the event strengthens Nigeria’s global image and shows the country’s commitment to professional PR standards.
