The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of several individuals in Anambra State over alleged vote-buying activities during the ongoing election.
According to reports, the arrests were made at multiple polling units across the state, including:
-
Emeka Ilokasia, apprehended at Ward 2, Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA)
-
Nwachukwu Loretta, arrested at Ward 2 (008), Awkuzu, Oyi LGA
-
Emuka Chuwudi, detained at Umunachi village, Dunukofia LGA
The EFCC stated that the suspects were caught in possession of materials suggesting attempts to influence voters in violation of electoral laws.
Anambra REC Dismisses Vote-Buying Allegations
Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, Elizabeth Agwu, dismissed widespread claims of vote-buying, urging anyone with credible information to come forward with verifiable evidence.
“When the two strongest candidates went to vote, they mentioned vote-buying. But as I said during voter education, anyone with such information should provide facts and figures,” Agwu stated.
She emphasized that vote-buying is a serious electoral offence, noting that no official reports were received from INEC staff or domestic and international observers regarding verified incidents.
“None of our staff or observers told me they saw any area where there was vote-buying. So, to me, it’s a rumour, and rumours don’t thrive with me,” she said firmly.

INEC Commends Smooth Electoral Process
Agwu further described the election process as well-organized, highlighting early deployment of materials, effective use of BVAS, and adequate security presence across polling units.
“It was a very good outing. INEC deployed early in nearly all polling units. There was adequate security, the BVAS worked well, and voters turned out en masse,” she noted.
She also cautioned against premature conclusions on voter turnout, explaining that final participation figures would only be available after collation.
