A Memorable Exit from AFCON 2025
The Democratic Republic of the Congo have exited the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2025. However, their most famous supporter ensured the nation would still be remembered.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, widely known as Lumumba Vea, became one of the tournament’s standout figures. His silent tribute to DR Congo’s late Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba captured attention across Africa and beyond.
As a result, his presence went far beyond football.
A Powerful Tribute in the Stands
Throughout the tournament, Mboladinga stood motionless during matches. He raised his right arm and held the pose from kickoff to the final whistle.
In addition, he dressed in bright, colorful suits. This made him easy to spot among thousands of fans.
Before each game, he climbed onto a small pedestal. Then, he recreated the famous Patrice Lumumba statue found in Kinshasa. Because of this, many fans described him as a living monument.
His gesture symbolized pride, remembrance, and resilience. It also reminded viewers of Congo’s long struggle for independence.
Heartbreak After Algeria Defeat
DR Congo’s campaign ended in dramatic fashion. Algeria scored a decisive goal in the 119th minute of the round of 16 match.
After the final whistle, Mboladinga was visibly emotional. He removed his glasses and wiped away tears.
Finally, he leaned back and fell into the crowd. This moment marked the end of his AFCON journey and moved fans across social media.
Reaction and Public Apology
Soon after the match, controversy followed. Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura celebrated by copying Mboladinga’s pose near the Congolese supporters.
As expected, the gesture drew strong criticism online. Many fans felt it showed a lack of respect.
Later, Amoura issued a public apology. He explained that he did not understand the historical meaning of the tribute. He also stated that there was no bad intention behind his actions.

Respect Restored Through Dialogue
To calm tensions, the Algerian Football Association invited Mboladinga to the team hotel. There, he met with the players.
During the visit, he received a personalized Algerian jersey with the name Lumumba printed on the back. This gesture was widely praised as a sign of respect and reconciliation.
A Legacy Beyond Football
Although DR Congo are out of AFCON 2025, Lumumba Vea leaves the tournament as a symbol of unity and remembrance.
His silent tribute showed how football can connect history, identity, and emotion. In the end, his impact reached far beyond the results on the pitch.
DR Congo, currently ranked 56th in the FIFA world rankings, will now focus on World Cup 2026 qualification. A crucial inter confederation playoff final is scheduled for March 31.
