Travel Advisory Issued

China has warned its citizens to avoid travel to Japan during the Lunar New Year holiday. The foreign ministry said Chinese nationals may face safety risks in Japan. It cited reports of crimes against Chinese citizens and recent earthquakes in the country.

Tensions Over Taiwan Comments

The warning follows political tension between China and Japan. In November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Japan. Beijing rejected the comment and has not eased its criticism since.

China responded with export curbs and flight cancellations. State media also published critical comments. The defense ministry warned Japan against using force in a Taiwan conflict.

Impact on Tourism and Airlines

Major airlines in China extended free change and cancellation options for Japan flights until October 24. The policies were first announced in November and renewed in December. The airlines include Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern.

Tourism numbers reflect the strain. Chinese visits to Japan fell 45 percent in December. However, Japan still reported record overall tourist arrivals that month.

Japan Repeats One China Policy

Prime Minister Takaichi has not withdrawn her earlier comments. She restated Japan’s support for the One China policy but said China’s actions in the region have increased security risks. She pointed to China’s military drills near Taiwan and its wider use of economic pressure.

Closer Tourism Ties With South Korea

While warning against travel to Japan, China has praised rising tourism with South Korea. Visa-free travel policies have boosted numbers in both directions. Chinese media framed the increase as a positive sign for regional cooperation.
