John Ternus takes over as Apple CEO on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. He will lead Apple during a time of rapid AI growth, supply chain challenges, and global pressure, Apple announced the leadership change in April after the Board approved its long term succession plan.
John Ternus is taking over after more than 20 years at Apple where he build his reputation as a hardware expert. He joined Apple in 2001 as part of the product design team . He was promoted to Vice President of Hardware Engineering, in 2013 and later to become senior Vice President,, overseeing hardware development for Apple’s top product.
John Ternus has been parts of muitiple Apple product launches. His work has covered hardware for iPhone, Ipad, Mac, and Airpods.He was also central to Apple’s transitiont to Apple Silicon for Mac computers.

Artifical intelligence will be a major challenge during the John Ternus era at Apple .Despite heavy investment in AI, Apple is competing with company that moved quickly on generative AI and AI powered product.
Tenus said the goal is to strengthen Apple’s AI capabilities while maintaining the company’s focus on tight integration between hardware and software.
Cook’s era as Apple CEO ends with this leadership transition. He was appointed in 2011. and will remain with Apple as executive chairman of the company’s board.
Apple’s ties with the US government will need close attention. The company faces pressure to increase manufacturing in the United States and deal with tariff concerns over overseas production.
