Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.

The accident occurred on a road near Lagos on Monday, when the vehicle carrying Joshua, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele collided with a stationary truck.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was discharged from a local hospital on Wednesday after being deemed fit to recover at home.

Details of the Crash

Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, a trainer, were both killed in the crash. Just hours before the accident, Joshua and Ayodele had shared clips on social media of themselves playing table tennis.

The vehicle, a Lexus SUV, was traveling along a busy highway linking Lagos and Ibadan when it struck the stationary truck.

Driver Charged in Fatal Crash

Nigerian authorities have charged the driver of the SUV, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, with dangerous driving causing death. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 20, 2026.

Joshua’s Return and Family Ties

Joshua, who has family roots in Nigeria, was visiting the country on holiday after his win over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025. Reports indicate he returned to the UK ahead of the funerals for Ghami and Ayodele.

The former Olympic champion and two-time world heavyweight titleholder is expected to continue recuperating in the UK while authorities investigate the crash.
