Anthony Joshua Returns to Gym Weeks After Fatal Car Crash
Anthony Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight world champion, has returned to the gym nearly three weeks after being involved in a deadly car crash in Nigeria.
The 36-year-old boxer was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos. Joshua escaped with minor injuries, but two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, tragically lost their lives. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
Joshua had been in Nigeria for a holiday and to visit family, shortly after knocking out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. He spent several days in the hospital and was discharged on New Year’s Eve. Questions remain about whether the former champion will fight again.
Returning to Training
Joshua shared updates on Snapchat, showing himself in the gym, working out, hitting pads, and performing lower leg exercises and cardio. He described the sessions as “mental strength therapy.” Additional clips showed him in a pool, signaling a gradual return to physical activity.
Among the posts, Joshua shared a photo of a cardio machine timer with the caption: “I am a fighter,” as well as a throwback picture of him facing heavyweight legend Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in 2017.

Family Remarks and Retirement Speculation
Earlier this month, Joshua’s uncle stated that the boxer had privately informed his family of his decision to retire from boxing. He described the choice as a relief for the family, given the emotional strain of watching Joshua fight.
Despite these claims, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed that no official decisions have been made regarding his future in boxing. Hearn emphasized that Joshua needs time to grieve and recover from the traumatic experience before considering his next steps.
Legal Proceedings
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the driver of the SUV, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged over the crash. Charges include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, and driving without a valid license. Kayode was granted bail set at five million naira ($3,480).
Joshua’s promoter noted that the former champion’s return to the ring is not being discussed publicly at this time. The focus remains on his recovery and well-being, as well as honoring the memories of his late friends.
