At least 500 internally displaced persons (IDPs), mostly women and children, have benefited from empowerment support at the Durumi IDP Camp in Abuja, while 10 children received educational scholarships under the AMA Care and Shelter Initiative.
The outreach program, led by Ambassador Amina Albert, distributed vocational tools, start-up funds, and educational support to improve livelihoods and promote self-reliance among displaced persons.
Empowering Women and Promoting Self-Reliance
Ambassador Albert explained that the initiative goes beyond handing out relief items. It aims to restore dignity and create sustainable opportunities for the beneficiaries.
Women at the camp received sewing machines, grinding machines, chillers, and start-up funds to establish small businesses and achieve economic independence.
She emphasized that humanitarian assistance is key to empowering vulnerable populations and breaking cycles of poverty.
Scholarships for Children
In addition to ongoing programs supporting 22 children, the initiative awarded scholarships to 10 more children. Ambassador Albert highlighted that education is a vital pathway to long-term development and a brighter future.
Community Impact and Stakeholder Support
The outreach coincided with the ambassador’s birthday and involved partners and volunteers, whom she praised for their commitment. She called for sustained collaboration to continue empowering and uplifting disadvantaged communities nationwide.
Residents of the camp welcomed the intervention. Ayuba Yusuf, Women Leader of Durumi IDP Camp, said:
“I have never seen this kind of program before. Many people—both men and women—will benefit from this gesture. It has truly put smiles on our faces and made us forget some of the painful experiences of the past.”
She urged Nigerians to support IDPs in rebuilding their lives and reintegrating into their communities.
