AFAN Praises Edun for Intervention as Falling Food Prices Affect Farmers
The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has praised the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for announcing plans to support farmers affected by recent price drops.
AFAN’s National President, Muhammed Magaji Gettado, issued a statement explaining that Nigeria’s falling food prices, though helpful to consumers, now hurt farmers. Many producers are selling their goods far below what they spent to grow them.
The association warned that the situation could discourage farmers and weaken future production. As a result, the country’s food system may face long-term risks if the issue is not addressed quickly.
However, AFAN welcomed the minister’s assurance that the Federal Government is preparing concrete steps to help farmers recover. The group said that the support must include:
-
strategic produce offtake
-
stronger commodity aggregation
-
access to affordable financing
-
targeted input support
-
market-stabilization systems that reduce farmers’ losses
According to the association, these measures will protect farmers and keep Nigeria’s food supply stable. AFAN added that the planned intervention aligns with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on food security, rural development, and economic stability.
Furthermore, AFAN restated its readiness to work with federal and state governments, as well as relevant agencies, to ensure that the interventions reach genuine farmers. It also urged stakeholders to maintain structured engagement for lasting solutions.
The association called on farmers across the country to stay resilient. It assured them that the planned federal support will help stabilize the sector, rebuild confidence, and strengthen agricultural production.
AFAN also reaffirmed its commitment to championing farmer-friendly policies and supporting national efforts toward food security and a resilient agricultural economy.
